I love photography, and composition is one of my favorite topics, so after reading Ken Rockwell's recommendation, I ordered this book immediately. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. I enjoy following Ken but I will be the first to tell you, sometimes he is way off base, and this is a good example. Yes, there are a few excellent chapters, but many - especially in the second part - don't really make a lot of sense. Part of the problem is that many of the photos he uses to illustrate his points, just aren't very good. Sorry, but I regret buying this book.
I never really understood the composition techniques that I had read about. The entire subject seemed so confusing so when it said that this was easy I had to get it. Yes, The Secrets to Creating Amazing Photos: 83 Composition Tools from the Masters, seemed to me like a recipe book. I keep it in my camera bag!My composition immediately improved and seems suitable for all levels of photographers. My husband is a semi-pro and he said the cleared up some misconceptions he had.I looked Marc Silber up and signed up for his mailing list and now I get photography tips from him all the time. So helpful.
I got this book after the review published by Ken Rockwell. It really is nothing groundbreaking, and I am not sure if Ken is right on this one. Anyways, Mark has made some good points in the book. However, my biggest misgiving about the book is the sample images or the lack there of. The quality of images used for illustrating the different rules of composition is really not that great, and I wish Marc has used some better examples.
I read this book in less than 30 minutes. While I can appreciate the attempt, and some principles are valid, I regretted purchasing this book and asked for an immediate refund. As with 99.9 % of books written by photographers on composition in art, this has little to do with real design. There is a huge knowledge gap between the way a classically trained artist learns composition and the modern photographer. A few better books to purchase would be The Art of Composition: A Simple Application of Dynamic Symmetry by Michel Jacbos and Pictorial Composition: An Introduction by Henry Rankin Poore. Most of these concepts are so vague they, for the most part, are meaningless.
This is a wonderful book on composition. Of course there are the well known compositional tools, but what I especially loved were the mood lines explained and with photos to help understand them more. I've seen these diagrams before but could never quite put my head around a lot of them. Marc has them described and photos to show the mood. And then of course, you can begin to look for these lines in nature, portraits, landscapes etc. ......it's a useful book, one to take with you and study and practice over and over until it becomes second nature. Highly recommend this book to beginners and professional photographers as well
After getting the book I started reading. I finished it in a couple of hours and realized that I knew some, but not all, of the secrets. Some of the examples were difficult to follow due to poor reproductions but I intend to use the book as explained in the beginning. It will be included in my photo gear as a reference guide I can refer to in the field. Easy to understand and a nice handbook for quick reference.
For me being a novice in the field of photography I was able to put the concepts in the book to use and my photos are looking better with the help and advice. I am sure any one could find some benefit from the read. I recommend it.
This book has tried and true advice as well as some concepts that are vaguer and harder to get your arms around. Still, an interesting read and advice considered.One criticism I read from reviewers is that the Look Inside wasn't very helpful.
