Tells the story from a time when memories were much fresher, even from those who were there, before the " myth" was properly packaged, marketed, and sold.And before death intervened and silenced them. Spitz will bust up some fantasies ( like putting this thing on was a great big old group hug ) as he details the sausage making that went into pulling this off. To many the ends justify the means, but poor John Roberts RIP, was flat out hoodwinked, deceived, and had his pockets picked. Funny thing is that had they been straight with him, Roberts probably would have gone along with Lang, who busted his ass to make Woodstock happen and Kornfield, whose well documented vanishing act in the months leading up to the event, are now retold in an " I was doing all the publicity man" historical revision commonly peddled. Barefoot in Babylon dispenses with all the self serving back slapping commonly pedaled as the way it was. While in no way undermining ones appreciation for the music performed that week in August 1969, after reading Spitz's take on the matter, the next time you watch the movie, having some background on many of the key players does effect the way one feels about the event.
very good book, but not pictures from festival included, I am dissapointed about missing pictures.
I was in Woodstock NY a few months ago and decided I wanted to read a little about the musical festival that didn't happen there but bears its name. I chose to download this particular book out of all my options and boy am I sorry. While I was interested in the planning snafus and personalities of the 4 men who brought Woodstock to fruition I was not ready to be mired in the minutia of every tiny details. I made a note after one section "did we really need a history of the Wallkill town hall?" which pretty much sums up my feelings about the book.The only reason I hung with it was I wanted to get to the actual music part - 80% of the way through the book Richie Havens finally plays the first note of the festival by the way - but again, what a disappointment. Why would a guy write a book about the most iconic musical festival of all time and then gloss over the music? I learned more about the acts who played Woodstock reading the Wikipedia page for the festival then I did in this book.
This is a really interesting look at the entire making of Woodstock which I was fascinated by. It's not just the actual event/concert it is why they chose the area, why they chose upstate NY, who got picked, everything from security to bathrooms is discussed in this amazing modern history no one else has told. Bob Spitz is an amazing writer and captures the whole aura of the era.
An essential read if you're at all interested how Woodstock happened. This is probably the best researched, most detailed book on Woodstock to date...every aspect of the planning and production seems to be covered at a level of detail that's absent from the books by Micheal Lang and Roberts/Rosenman. Recommended.
I had this book many moons ago and gave up locating a replacement....one of the best "True" accounts of what took place before, during and after that momentous occasion in 1969
This book changed my life when I first read it almost 40 years ago. It hasn't changed this time around I just understand it a lot more. A must read for anyone in festival production industry
fantastic book...an incredibly detailed account...a nostalgic memoir for those of us who lived it...
