In my original review, I related how the card with the subscription key on it indicated that the key had to be used by 3/31/2018. After contacting the publisher, I found that this was not so much of a consideration, as the key still appeared in their system as unused. There was also human error (mine) at work: the card did not indicate that the URL you have to visit to enter the key is case-sensitive. Once I had entered the URL exactly as it appears on the card, I had no problems signing up and activating my one-year subscription to the online edition.As far as the style guide itself is concerned: The book itself is well organized (not unlike the Chicago Manual of Style), and contains more information than I will probably use (even though most of my editing work is in the health care/global health field). Even if you don't need to use AMA style, the book has a solid style section—but it will be especially valuable if you work with documents containing medical terminology and want to limit the number of questions you need to ask.
I needed an AMA style guide for an advanced pharmacology class, and this book arrived quickly in perfect condition. The book itself is well-bound, heavyweight, and appears to be printed well. I have not complaints about the manual itself, though it is definately written more with publishing authors in mind. If you are a student looking for formatting information for your class, the AMA manual will provide little direction for you, as it assumes that authors will be following the manuscript formatting specified by the particular journal/publisher they are writing for. This manual will, however, provide you with exhaustive information on header/footer content, reference citation, contributer acknowledgement, grammer specifics, capitalization, etc. So, if you are going to be utilizing AMA style for a significant number of classes or if you are an author who publishes in journals requiring AMA format, this book will be a wonderful reference for you. Otherwise, there are a significant number of online free resources regarding AMA style as well as a online subscription service from JAMA that may better suit your needs.
Once I got used to how this book was set up, I love it. It is very detailed and easy to understand and although a required textbook for my major, I am glad I have it and would have bought it anyway. It is necessary to have throughout your entire time at college in order to ensure all formatting and writing content is correct for AMA style. It did seem to be missing a few things that I needed or maybe I just haven't found it so far. Overall, it is very comprehensive and well organized.
This edition was printed much lighter than the 9th edition. I asked the publisher if I just had a bad copy, but they stated that there is a different publisher now, and they forwarded my complaint to them. No one ever got back to me, and I needed to use the manual, so I abandoned the issue. Otherwise, the manual is as expected, an invaluable resource for editors and writers of articles destined for AMA journals.
Unless you use the online version very very frequently, don't buy the bundle. The so called bundle means a package of the book and one-year online use of the book. Besides the new part for Internet publishing, there is almost nothing new. I prefer the last version, which is much thinner.
GREAT DEAL -- the book came shrink-wrapped and like new, as described. I haven't tried the online activation code yet....
The AMA has always exemplified excellence when it comes to their publications. The AMA Style of editing is by far the most logical method. This book also came with online access to the content which has been extremely helpful when I needed something quick. Excellent resource and every medical writer or author should have this book in their personal library.
Necessary for my editing and proofing work. Very thorough.
