This book was extremely interesting and hard to put down. Although it is a history of how MCA started it is the story of Lew Wasserman. The book shed much light on how agents, studios, and movie stars maneuver around and survive working in the movie industry. If you enjoy reading about the mechanics of Hollywood’s business side this is for you. This book also delves into how some stars got the deals and roles they did and stars who got dumped by MCA.I don't agree with some reviewers on here who praise Lew Wasserman's leadership skills and management style. He lead by brutal intimidation and got rid of employees - and movie stars - fast and quick once they stopped serving his purposes and never looked back (including his children because they didn’t meet HIS expectations). Reading that there were people who actually went to vomit once he lashed out at them in meeting, doesn't send a signal to normal humanity that Lew Wasserman was anything but a big, unadulterated, unfiltered bully.Yes, he was an innovator regarding setting up “packages†for film and TV and yes, he made his clients lots of money, and yes again, he made MCA the powerhouse that it was but the book also shows us that he was very manipulative, two-faced, and generally a poor imitation of a human being.Anyway, this book is well written, seems well researched, and I found that it was not biased towards Lew either one-way-or-the-other.Fabulous read!!
If you enjoy reading about the history of Hollywood, this is the book for you. But be forewarned, it reads like a history book and takes a real time commitment to finish. The author goes back to the beginning career of Jules Stein and booking of bands through the sale of Universal to the Bronfman's. Clearly the focus of the book is Lew Wasserman who led MCA from agency to studio with significant influences in politics.Probably the most entertaining part of the book is the unique stories of the stars of the 40s and 50s since Wasserman was at his peak making careers. Stories are presented about Tony Curtis, Jimmy Stewart and Marilyn Monroe to name a few and are quite entertaining as well as showing Wasserman's power to destroy or make a career.This book tries to intertwine politics, entertainment and the mafia, and while there may be a connection, sometimes he seems to reach too far and lose focus on the principals who grew MCA into the behemoth that it was. I recommend this book to anyone with an in-depth interest in Hollywood history and what it was like from mid-century.
Fantastically well-researched, exhaustively detailed book that is a treasure trove to anyone lured by the business of Hollywood. There is so much to this book that the inter-weaving of vaudeville, television, film is made to appear seamless, which at MCA, was the whole plan. One learns of Wasserman, MCA, and a whole lot of other trivia, stories and tidbits from the golden era of television and film. Like so many biographies, the latter years of the subject's life become the most scant and in need of some more fleshing out. The author keeps in good balance his personal feelings toward his subject, but is downright toxic with most other individuals in the show business field. Where this near contempt seems to come from is not clear, its viciousness actually conspicuous, but overall it doesn't pull down the enjoyment one gets from a story, heavily-populated with names of so many we've heard so many times before, but now in new settings and with different rules of the game. Lew's rules.
People and organizations that one would never know about control things and not for the benefit of stockholders.Now many of us who were in the motion picture theater business can understand why Universal had some really big bombs with some really great stars.

An incredibly detailed and fascinating look into the world of perhaps hollywood's greatest businessman ever. I wish there was more information about the great company mca and mr. wasserman, especially something sanctioned by him. there are libraries of info inside that man that we need to know!so far, we have added a tunafish lunch to our routine, a la lew. but we need more info, more books to balance this story. seems to me that bernard dick's "city of light" about universal pictures, "stiffed" and "hit men" about the music business and others offer snapshots from the whole film of the last mogul, but i would love to know more.respect to lew wasserman and dennis mcdougal.
If you are only vaguely interested in how Hollywood was really ruled in the 40s - 70s, buy this book. Great insight. A must read for anyone in the industry.
It seems like the author didn't have many good things to say about lew wasserman and mca .I got the impression that mca was doing what all big talent producers do only they did it better than anyone else.It's just like knocking walmart for being the best co. in retail . I felt like the author wanted to do a hatchet job on mr wasserman and mca even thought they made millions for their clients also .
