A serious, non-sensational consideration of the meaning of pornography related to class structure, the culture wars, individual psychology and sexual identity. Most particularly, it attacks the simplistic notion that pornography necessarily leads to action and emphasizes the functioning of fantasies. The author is clearly a Freudian and probably a Marxist (although the latter is not totally clear) and has many very interesting observations and analyses, conveyed with wit and not a little humor.
This is Laura Kipnis at her analytical best. If you've read her more recent books: this one maintains her usual snark/humor, while being much more analytical than her recent stuff. Not that I don't love her more recent stuff--it's wonderful--but if you are looking for an analysis that shows how different theoretical backgrounds can be used to illuminate a field of study from multiple and opposing perspectives that each shed different kinds of light on the topic, this book is a tour de force in that way.
Don't know how I ran across this on Amazon. First was searching for Italian poets then saw this. Just sad. I have a friend who works in the ER and let me tell you - "snuff" films, extreme bondage, and violent sex towards women are real and they DON'T empower women!
