The Japanese Tattoo, by Sandi Fellman

Review

"American photographer Sandi Fellman used a rare large size Polaroid camera to create these photos of Irezumi Japanese men and women who wear elaborate full-body tattoos. Fellman treats the tattoos as artworks and their creators as artists. Her text touches on the tattooing process, common motifs, the sociology of the tattoo, and relationships between the tattoo masters and their clients. Author D.M. Thomas has contributed two pages of his reactions to these unusual and even disturbing images. The 46 color plates in this volume, most of them whole body nudes, should prove provocative, fascinating, or repellant to a wide variety of library patrons." —Library Journal

This book is laughably bad. Firstly, trust me on the reviews about the quality of the photos. It looks like the book is filled with images from Google blown up to way beyond their resolution capabilities. They are fuzzy and unclear. Furthermore you'll have these giant pages just of a single photo (in horrible quality) and on the other side a stark white page with maybe two sentences of text taking up not even 1/16 of the page and rest going unused. I'm all for white pages in photo books, but this is every single page. This is beyond padding. I collect Japanese tattoo magazines (Tribal Tattoo is my favorite publication, and I highly recommend their magazines) and Japanese tattoo photobooks..the magazines have better quality and better information than this. There is a passage in this book that states "it MIGHT symbolize.." so they don't even know what they are actually discussing in this book. I honestly think someone just rounded up a few people, took some pictures on their phone, and then looked at the wikipedia page and wrote a book. I am sincerely upset I spent ANYTHING on this. I honestly have to wonder how this got published at all. This is not even worth the used book price. Save your money, there are FAR better options on the market. Many retailers on the Amazon JP website too will ship to the US and you can get official magazines far better than this book for the same price.I uploaded two photos to accompany this review so you can see what I mean about the poor photo quality and the extreme padding within this book.

If you have no experience with horimono, this book gives some excellent images focusing mostly on the works of three masters (only one, Horiyoshi III Sensei of Yokohama still actively tattoos). The book is worth buying for the images alone. And I wish it were the images alone. The captions are often naive, bordering at times on offensive. The author at best over-exotifies and at worse verges on ridiculing some of her subjects, and seems to know very little about the tradition, history, and mores of Japanese society and horimono. Add to that an introduction that is almost unexplainably ludicrous (by an author with no bio!) and you have a book that's great to look at, just not to read. I'd give it 5 stars if it was just the photos.Read Takahiro Kitamura's books as well as Donald Richie's for better information.

Not worth buying this thing at all. It's like browsing photos from Google... No need to spend money for seeing photos for ideas. It's also not a good range of different Japanese styles...she's only included a very typical Japanese style which gets old after the first few pages. Save your money. Just my 2 ¢

I just want to say thanks, I was a little bit skeptical about how will be the condition of the book, and when I opened it was like a brand New! In a really good shape! this is a present for a friend who is a tattoo artist in Mexico and he wants something about Japanese tattoos, I believe he will be very happy to see this book. So once again Thanks a lot I am very happy with this purchase!

Lacks any narrative beyond basic descriptions. Limited pictures.

I own a tattoo studio, and I've used this book countless times to explain elements of Japanese tattoos to my clients. I can't tell how many times I've said "wind bars...like these in this picture" or "these are peony flowers and these are lotus" or "look at this little hairy penis". The photos are large and varied. And while they aren't frame worthy, they do help for research purposes. Dragons, samurai, koi, pubic hair, flowers, penises, ISO-bars, wind bars, foreskin, finger waves, etc. This is a great purchase!(4 stars because I have to cover all the penises with my thumb when I show it to less mature clients ::giggle::)

This is a visually stimulating book - for both the casual observer, who will probably be horrified at some of the work, and for the Tattoo Collector - who will be inspired to new heights by the glorious array of Classical Japanese Artworks presented herein. Printed on heavy stock with beautiful color separation, this is truly an important reference of the Japanese repertoire.

Awesome book in great used condition. Perfect for a beginner in Japanese work.
