Review
"If you enjoy tales of the sea as much as I do, you'll find this revamped edition of Wreck of the Whale Ship Essex an excellent addition to your library." - Passage Maker"This is a handsome volume, of which Chase would have been proud, and Melville would have acclaimed for its vivid illustrations that make realistic the long gone fishery he described. It stands on its own merit as a beautiful book to tell Chase's tale again, and bring back visual reminders of a sea trade that changed the world (and literature), and is now gone forever." - Columbus Dispatch"This newly published version of Chase's story includes an introduction by Gilbert King, who outlines the story with broad brushstrokes as a harrowing tale on the water. The book is filled with fascinating details, from marine biology lessons to sailing history and survival by cannibalism, and the author's voice is authoritative and unapologetic. (Gilbert) King's additions to his tale are a fitting tribute." - Sailing"His narrative comes to life in this new, illustrated version, filled with more than 200 photographs, maps, fine-art prints and drawings." - Boston Globe"His narrative comes to life in this new, illustrated version, filled with more than 200 photographs, maps, fine-art prints and drawings." - Boston Globe"This is a handsome volume, of which Chase would have been proud, and Melville would have acclaimed for its vivid illustrations that make realistic the long gone fishery he described. Not only did this book meet my expectations but it exceeded my expectations. This story has fascinated me for years, ever since I first read Moby Dick and found out it was based on a true story. To read it as written by a man who experienced it first hand was astonishing. I cannot imagine living through such an ordeal.
The book written by Owen Chase is a riveting account of a harrowing experience full of excitement, action, death and the darkest side of human nature when under pressure. Try cutting out the heart of a dead comrade, roasting it on an open fire and then slicing it up for the eating. There's much more. Anyone interested in the history of whaling or early ocean adventures must read this. This particular version is very well-illustrated and could easily find its way onto many coffee tables. This is, however, a rather irritating read in that Chase's book is laid out with numerous interruptions of side stories and distractions. You read along with Chase and then, all of a sudden, you have a break where an article about some other experience or item of interest may take up several pages. To keep your train of thought with Chase, you have to leaf through several pages and try to find where his book resumes.I danced through all the distractions and finished Chase's book and then back-tracked to read the many distracting inserts. It's all interesting but the layout could have been better done to preserve the flow of reading the main book and adding the accessory material in an appendix or at least between chapters of the main book.Overall, though, get the book. It's a large book with good information and pretty illustrations.
Really enjoyed.
Excellent, beautifully illustrated, and fascinating book about the Nantucket whaling industry and the men who faced the challenges of that brutal industry. Individual articles make it easy to sit down with the book and read one portion at a time. coming back to the book whenever you wish, without worrying about losing the thread of what you have read before.
You don't have to really know Moby Dick or that tale's background, but this nicely illustrated account of the Great White Whale will easily bring you into or back to the great American adventure of whaling. It is an elegant book, meant for handling, perusing, reading and not just coffee-tabling; great pictures, text and sidebars intermixed with the recounting of the horrific adventure by one of its few survivors.
Nice coffee table book, it has a bit of a.d.d jumping back and forth from excerpts by Melville and other whaling stories to Owen chases account. Not a smooth read but great to look at and skim. Worth the price.
Beautifully illustrated and designed. Would make for a great gift!
My nephews, who love books, will be very happy!
