A brilliant virtuoso of violence, Richard Marcinko rose through Navy ranks to create and command one of this country's most elite and classified counterterrorist units, SEAL TEAM SIX. Now this thirty-year veteran recounts the secret missions and Special Warfare madness of his worldwide military career -- and the riveting truth about the top-secret Navy SEALs. Marcinko was almost inhumanly tough, and proved it on hair-raising missions across Vietnam and a war-torn world: blowing up supply junks, charging through minefields, jumping at 19,000 feet with a chute that wouldn't open, fighting hand-to-hand in a hellhole jungle. For the Pentagon, he organized the Navy's first counterterrorist unit: the legendary SEAL TEAM SIX, which went on classified missions from Central America to the Middle East, the North Sea, Africa and beyond. Then Marcinko was tapped to create Red Cell, a dirty-dozen team of the military's most accomplished and decorated counterterrorists. Their unbelievable job was to test the defenses of the Navy's most secure facilities and installations. The result was predictable: all hell broke loose. Here is the hero who saw beyond the blood to ultimate justice -- and the decorated warrior who became such a maverick that the Navy brass wanted his head on a pole, and for a time, got it. Richard Marcinko -- ROGUE WARRIOR.

I liked the book because I learned a lot about the history of team 6. The book is raw, written in sailor language by a sailor.I would not recommend it to my 10 year old granddaughter, but other the sailor salt, the book a good read and recommended. As a father of a Marine and solders, I can’t express how disappointing it is to know that the US military Industrial Complex is infested with wasteful spending - ticket punching - butt covering politicians that are motivated more about personal collection of unearned medals, than getting the job done in the most efficient and expedient manner. Support for unconventional warfare has always been a source of conflict with big ego battle space commanders.I share Marcinko’s frustration. If he ever reads this I would like for him to sign my book! I would travel the earth to have a beer with him.
What an incredible book about a man who has "been there and done that" and has the scars and stars to prove it. Reading a book like this always shows how so many people, (myself included), are simply underachievers when compared to the likes of Richard Marcinko. I am often quite in awe of the experiences and accomplishments of Richard and the sheer tenacity this man showed while blazing a new trail for others to follow.I love the no holds barred way he tells his story, and accepts the full ownership of both successes and failures in the endeavors that make up his life, not just his career. If you are ready to be humbled, get yourself a drink of your choice grab a good place to concentrate and let Mr. Marcinko take you on a wild ride through the life of a man who is truly one of a rare breed of people. Those who really take life by the horns and steer it their own way.
Very interesting story of the struggles of one very determined warrior. He had to fight the establishment most of his life and after creating Seal Team Six, he had no opportunity to lead them into actual battle. Seal Team Six is what it is today, however, not as good as it was when conceived, but still the most effective special ops unit in the world. On several occasions he was asked to test the security of different military bases and after demonstrating that the bases had little if any security, he was severely criticized for doing such a good job. The base commanders and the admirals in charged were very embarrassed by him demonstrating how bad the situation was. He even went aboard a couple nuclear submarines and set dummy bombs on the reactors. He and his men were able to go about any where they wanted to go on the bases without causing much concern. In one of his escapades in (Red Cell) he actually went into the office of the CNO and went through his files . He and his Seals were really sneaky. Great reading.
Remember seeing him in popular mechanics I think with his "sharkman of the delta story. Enjoyed all his "fiction" as well. In particular the one about nuclear power plants. His technique would not work at the one I worked at, his crew would got an armed security officer posted. However I worked at a plant that had inhouse security and the rumor was we were payed better than wackenhut for example. Good book, his leadership techniques work and that unless otherwise directed system of screwing with establishment pu**ies Is cool.
Dick is a tough guy and was hated by a lot of the Navy brass and many seals who couldn't meet his standards. One such guy is a friend of mine and hates him because he didn't make it into Seal Team Six. My friend retired as a Lt. Commander, but was lucky Marcinko did run him out of the SEALS.All of his books read about the same with a lot of his personal feelings about Military Brass. It gets to a point when he starts to rant and I see certain descriptive words that he used over and over again in every book I just skip over and the book goes faster.I read all his books as he is the real deal, even if he has a BIG EGO. He can do that because he did the REAL SEAL job. Not just an observer.
I knew a few people in the business, but none compare to Cdr. Richard Marcinko. His story depicts the kind of man our country needs, but he is hated by the "bureaucratic" members of the Military because he is what they should but can never be, a Warrior. You will read this book in less than a week because it is riveting, and you may find yourself up late at night reading about his plans, his adventures and his true to life training of his men. You will never accuse him of "leading from behind" because he never does.
Very macho, highly motivating, singularly focused individual.Amazing what he was able to accomplish. Willing to sacrifice it all.The language gets to be a little much but it's probably word for word how it happened.Able to learn leadership principles I would apply and things I wouldn't. Helps me understand others with drastically different personalities.
When most non-military young people today hear the phrase, 'freedom isn't free,' it usually goes in one ear and out the other. Marcinko is a writer who can show them what that means, in unforgettable detail. He's an amazingly accomplished individual with an outstanding natural gift for illustrating his world and his long experience in it. I cannot recommend Marcinko's books highly enough!
