If you paint and use color, or just want to appreciate color in painting, this is the book. What makes Betty Edwards a wonderful teacher is her ability to question what she is doing as a teacher and then find ways to introduce new ways to study the material so as to bring the essence of the lessons home to the student. In this book she explains that her students were not grasping the essence of color and how to render it effectively. After some thought she developed new lessons that explained to the students how to understand and use color. These lessons are now brought to us in the form of this tomb.I have executed the lessons, and they work. Even though I have been painting for 10 years I learned a lot from this book and doing the exercises. Doing the exercises is key, but they are very straight forward to do and one can learn even in "failure" (I had to do a couple of them more than once).So there you have it. This is an instructional book that works in that it communicates to the reader (student) lessons about color and color usage that are invaluable. The lessons are clear and the results of doing the lessons are an increased understanding of art and color.Highly recommended.
This is a wonderful introduction about color and color theory for the beginner, but it doesn't go beyond what is taught in art classes at the high school and beginning introductory classes at the college level. I was hoping for expert tips and something about how color palettes work in paintings. Of course, if you're just getting started in art and not attending college or an art school, this is a worthwhile book.
I cannot say enough good about this book. Being new to color mixing and understanding color in the "painting" world, I needed solid, basic information; it is not only there but done intelligently and clearly. She is asking you to use acrylics in the exercises to simplify the process, but I have actually started with watercolors and am still getting what I need in the way of a good learning experience. Have learned how the brain changes what we are actually seeing, how colors influence each other when in proximity, and all the color wheel basics. I bought a used copy so I could mark it up! I will be using this info in my fiber work from now on!
I first checked this book out of my local library and loved it so much I kept it for almost a year. I returned it the day after my Amazon copy arrived and the fine was worth every penny. I had struggled with my ability to produce watercolors that I liked. This book changed everything. Through a mixture (no pun intended) of theory and exercises, it helped me understand how to achieve perfect results. It is a constant reference. I have simply found no better book on understanding color.
When I saw the book about COLOR by the renown author of "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" I expected something new and perhaps radical concerning color in art. But the information in the book is the same old same old information and terms in hundreds of aging books in the library and on the racks at art supply stores. The book was a disappointment and I am now using it under the leg of my table that was wobbling. There was nothing new and interesting in the book.
At last a book on Colour that explains clearly, with exercises for practice, the various aspects of colour use. Finding the values of colour on a black & white grid I have always found impossible. Now it's clearer.Betty Edwards writes clearly, obviously loves her subject and is accustomed to imparting information to students at all levels.Furthermore, the font size in this book is great and easy to read, particularly for mature aged artists.I would recommend this book as a must for all artists from beginners to those more experienced who have, like me, struggle to master the nuances of getting the correct value in colour.
If you want to dig deep into Color theory, this is an excellent book. This is a textbook and not your typical how-to art book.
Excellent book on color theory. I'm a makeup artist and used to paint as well. I thought this contained great information for anyone who works with color on a regular basis.
Very great fundametals lighting basic and color pigment theories - the half of book was all in my mind now - especially the color combination and theories of color circle with 3 attributes hsb- even im practing with digital device but they still really helps my basic understanding - i opened my mind on how to understand and knowing - and the best is seeing and picking the color -Perfect for fundamental worksT
