The Applied NT Commentary is divided into three major sections: Definition of Terms, General Articles and Commentary. One of the things I like about this commentary are the General Articles before the commentary and the approach they take in writing them. The articles cover Christian doctrine and serve as a mini-systematic theology, covering topics such as salvation, election, baptism and the second coming. The editors assume acceptance of certain basic Christian beliefs such as the Trinity, the death, burial and resurrection of Christ for our sins, the need for salvation, and the inspiration of scripture. What I really like is that on other issues, they present all of the major views. For example, they present look at the arguments for and against views of baptism as to what role baptism plays in our salvation and evidence for each. They look at different views of the second coming (pre-millennialism, post-millennialism, amillenialism) and presents the arguments for each. One theses and other "secondary" issues, they give the arguments for each and allow the reader to come to their own conclusion.The second and largest part of the book is the commentary on the New Testament. Each book of the New Testament begins with an introduction which covers background information (authorship, themes, etc.). The introduction is followed by an outline and then commentary by chapter and verse. The commentary is basic Christian teachings/beliefs and I don't detect a strong bias. On more controversial passages, readers are referred to the articles in the General Articles. While the commentary is not in-depth, it is a one volume commentary and I don't expect that from it.My one criticism of the book is the Kindle navigation. While one can go to the beginning of each book, the reader has to keep turning pages to get to the chapter. This can be difficult if one is looking for commentary in the middle of the Gospel of Matthew, for example. I really wish they would have linked the outlines to the commentary which would have made navigation much easier. Other than that, I'm really pleased with the commentary. The commentary part is helpful, but I find the General Articles to be very good and my favorite part of the book. I also appreciate the ecumenical approach the editors take.
The Applied New Testament Commentary is a truly wonderful help in understanding The Bible! It was written simply by English speaking missionaries in Napal for people who were unfamiliar with God's Word. Then, the commentary was translated from the language of Napal into English -- just at my level. I highly recommend Dr. Hale's Commentary. It has enhanced my comprehension of and enjoyment in reading God's Word. I feel like I have discovered hidden GOLD learning about this book. Except that The Message of The Bible is priceless.

First a confession, I have not read this commentary extensively. My review is based on reading a few selected topics of interest to me to see if I would be interested in owning and reading this work. While I found nothing wrong being taught, neither did I find it particularly useful. The commentary section is very basic and brief. The topical section is sort of a basic systematic theology, except no system is evident. It is simply a collection of articles on some basic Christian topics; not a bad thing in itself, other than by titling it a commentary, the reader is not lead to expect more.Some topics are non-controversial. These are dealt with in a sound biblical fashion, but the articles are extremely brief and if you have any more than a rudimentary understanding of Christian doctrine you won’t learn much. Other topics involve doctrines over which believers find themselves in disagreement. In these cases some of the differing views are described in only the briefest fashion. The presentation of each view seems to be even handed (in the topics I read). This is a good thing as far as it goes. But the reader has no clue as to where the authors stand, nor what the arguments are for each view. A few verses are listed that are used by each of the views, but there is no exegesis of the passages or any theological arguments explored. The reader remains largely uniformed and confused as to how to go about choosing a view, and may even end up with the impression that the Bible is simply self-contradictory.I can’t really recommend this to any audience. People with very little knowledge of Christianity will find some of the topics informative, but these same people will be confused by the topics that deal with controversial issues. Those with a better grasp Christianity will find the topics way too brief to be useful.I have respect for the authors and believe they are basically sound in doctrine and well-intended, but in my opinion they have either attempted far too little or far too much.
I think this is a great commentary. I love how it is simple and because of that it has been able to be translated into many languages! Not all commentaries are written for the purpose of all Christians in all cultures to understand. They provided different views on some topics (without naming the denomination) the reader can then decide for themselves which view they think is right.
